Dave,

Concerning wearing of KD by the Bn, the best source would be old photographs.
Having said that, tropical dress (KD) was worn in Malta in summer. This included shorts. Even the Police and Civil Servants wore shorts and open-necked shirts. It can be sweltering here. When I joined the RAF my KD uniform was the old style (khaki drill).

I think you are correct. The only photos I have relating to Malta in the 1890's show the usual tunic or frock being worn.

However, going through my reference books it would appear that the wearing of KD (depending on the time of year) was extended to Malta in 1896.

So, your S/T probably was worn until the Bn returned to the UK in 1902.

Captain J.M. Wismayer's book on the history of the King's Own Malta Regiment features a photo of the officers of the 1st Bn Royal Malta Regiment of Militia during Summer Camp in 1897 and all, including the CO, are wearing khaki. I would expect it to stand to reason that a regular British infantry Bn would be similarly attired.

Resurrecting this thread as I think I owe it to contributors re better quality badge pics which may help to answer some of the points raised.
Unfortunately I seem to have lost the means of counter-rotation and the pics are coming out sideways!
