Default Middlesex 17th/23rd Service Btns (Football)??

I have recently come across this photograph. I believe it was originally part of a card containing Middlesex WWI raised items, including the Public Works Battalion, some collar dogs, and another enamel badge. Sadly, I don't have the original badge

Can anyone enlighten me on this badge? Clearly, it's not listed in KK. Does anyone know whether this was the 17th (1st Footballers) or 23rd (2nd Footballers), or both? I have seen shoulder titles in the past, but never a cap badge.

I cant find the original file now, but also recall that the enamel badge had "UPS" on a scroll below a fusiliers grenade, with 2 flags. Another mystery probably better suited to a different post....

Any guidance will be gratefully received as always!
Neil

Hi Neil,
i believe that this badge is a spurious badge and never actually existed outside the repro artists studio.
Cheers, Dave

Thanks Dave. I suspected this might be the case - never seen or heard of one!

I'll try and find the file I have re the UPS badge. It was attached to an email I think, so need to wade through them.

Just sent you a PM re Leeds Pals.

Cheers Neil

It is the University and Public Schools Battalion(s) of the Royal Fusiliers (think it was something like 18th to 21st Battalions - i'm sure some-one will know exactly which Battalions it was.

Dave,

Is quite right - the Middlesex 'Football' Bn cap badge is total fantasy and made to decieve the collector. The Bn did not wear such an item.

Search for football and there is a photo of a 23rd Middlesex with the standard cap badge and no football in sight.

And an unrecorded shoulder title. Not too clear though.
