Lord Durham Pals 18th (Service) Battalion patch
Hi all,
I have wondered if I would ever find such a patch. My grandad Sergeant Charles Moss, C Company, Durham Pals would have worn one just like this. More to follow in a new album in the morning, http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...p?albumid=2930 cheers Dean. Last edited by mooke07; 14-05-16 at 02:39 AM. |

Good morning Dean.
Are you the proud owner? If so, nice one mate. A very scarce item. Regards |

It looks like it was from the Grace Gibbons collection? regards Mark |

Thanks Mark,
I have seen reference to the Grace Gibson selling through Bonhams in 2004 for £50,000 but have not seen a list of its contents. Clanfield sold a RF patch recently from her collection and wondered if this was the original source of mine. Has anyone access to this, cheers Dean. |

A very interesting album and a useful source of reference for some one like me who has no knowledge in this area but just finds it fascinating. Thanks for posting and congratulations

Thanks Mike,
I have pictures of some on uniforms in several of the Pals series of books. I will post some references. A poorly documented area of British militaria, cheers Dean. |

Before my twin brother and I started school education our father taught us a lot through nature walks and references to cigarette cards. We recall a fantastic set by John Player and Sons called 'Army Corps and Divisional Signs 1914-1918' There were a couple of series covering 150 cards (Published in 1924 I think). Some cards illustrate battalion insignia. They are an excellent reference - always good to see things 'in the flesh' though, particularly given their rarity.

These are really good Mike, good of you to post it, enjoying looking at and reading the reverse of these. Quite a task to research them I must say. Cheers Dean.

A pleasure and thank you for starting this thread - The Military Heraldry Society have been allowed to publish the identification pamphlets compiled by Major John Warring. They are for members only and are only black and white line drawings - however they are very comprehensive and I am pretty sure cover WW1 insignia to some degree. From memory the first two volumes contain most of his British insignia. You may find it worth the membership fee to get hold of them - the original versions are now difficult to find and expensive. The reprints are also a far more handy size - details can be found here. http://www.militaryheraldrysociety.com/ http://www.militaryheraldrysociety.com/founder.html Interesting that John Warring was a DLI Officer by the looks Members would assist your research through the quarterly 'Formation Sign' publication too I am sure Mike Last edited by Mike B; 14-05-16 at 01:45 PM. |

Although I had bids on a couple of items in the Grace Gibson collection I was not successful on any.
The auction catalogue has some nice illustrations but only a part of the collection is actually illustrated. P.B.

Many thanks for posting this Peter. It looks like a very impressive collection.
They have not been a focus of my collecting until now but maybe I am maturing at last. Cheers Dean. |
