Default RCMP Plastic buttons?

Hi Guys,

Just been watching "How it's made" and they appear to be making at one point RCMP buttons, in plastic? But Gold plated, they look very good from what I could see:

From 5.20 onwards...

but the close up is 6.02

The current issue Canadian Forces "General Service" buttons are the same sort of coated platic. If it is cheap and looks good, why not?
They don't get squashed and I don't have to polish them.

They definitely are cheap.... the finish is easily damaged / worn off. Although brass buttons would certainly require more upkeep, for the couple of times a year that I have to wear my DEU's I would prefer the brass buttons myself.
