Asc
I'm wanting to get a WWI Army Service Corps badge c. 1916 - 1919. Looking on eBay I just can't tell if any are real - they all look fake to me.
Can anyone tell me if it should have a solid centre or punched-out (if that's the correct term)? Should the initials ASC be very crisp? - most I've seen look really rough. If anyone could post a photo of a 100% genuine badge I'd really appreciate it. Also, When did they swap over to RASC and would all troops have got the new badge before being disembodied, or continued with their old ones? Cheers, Simon |

sw63,
1916-19 could be either type, but more specifically the solid 'economy' version.Voided with 'ASC' centre worn with KC from 1902. Not sure if these are faked ,but assume that most are nowadays ! 'Royal' title granted in 1918.Probably started wearing by 1919 ? These are 1 of the more common badges, even the solid (non-voided) type is 'fairly' easy to come by. Cheers ! Steve |

Simon,
The GV RASC badges are very rare which does suggest that the old ASc badges were being used up for some years after the RASC title was granted. I have a voided one for sale in the wants section. If you are after a 1916-19 one then either the voided or the solid economy were being worn. The solid economy was only made for that period though. Alan |

Make do and mend ASC
I have in my ASC/RASC collection a pair of ASC shoulder titles with an "R" brazed on, obviously there was a shortage in 1918 of the new titles. As for restriking ASC badges, I believe there was a million servicemen wearing or had worn the ASC cap badge by 1918. If they all had one each, there should be enough to go round!
I do have a spare RASC GvR cap badge, heavily polished, but genuine, £7.50 including postage if anyones interested or will exchange. |
