Default Forgeries or just different?

I have an East Surrey QC cap badge that puzzles me. It is much heavier than my 'normal' one, the centre is far more protruberant and the Guildford Arms are brass not WM. It is normal size and has a single slider fixing. Could it be for some purpose other than a cap badge or just a bad 'un?

I also have two GVR Royal Engineer badges, a) is pierced between the garter and laurels whereas b) is solid in that area. Both have pierced centres and crowns. a) is a nice badge and has a good feel but Gaylor seems to indicate that b) is right. Which one is a forgery or are they both good and if so why different?
