I picked up this badge on the weekend and am unsure as to what I have. It looks to be a Pouch badge as it is lugged NS and EW. I can't find anything close in my reference books so am asking for help with an I.D. Thanks

I'd agree with KLR about the cypher William IV for me. I think the crown may have been what foxed Jim into thinking it was Victorian as they can be identical.

Luke

I posted before I saw P.B. had got off the phone to his sister and done the explaination lol

Isn't that the crown of the House of Hanover?. As I recall William IV and Victoria both came from the Hanover line. The crown has picked up the name Queen Victoria Crown.

William IV 1830-1837 is a great I.D. for period... thanks as I don't have a badge that old and wouldn't have thought in that direction... still wondering about what it represents or it's use... I was also wondering about the finish.. is that blackening just tarnish from 170 years of not being cleaned... my wife says I should polish it... but i don't think so... where does your vote go... yay or nay.... thanks Jim A

I think its either tarnish or has been coated (not throughly) in something Jim, you can see gold spots in certain areas which appear to be present in the recesses indicative to me that they have not been rubbed to remove the plate thefore not tarnished. I'd leave it mate, 170 years in the making one dab of polish its gone and if you don't like it you'll never get it back so unless you really dislike it as it is I'd say leave it well alone.

As to what it is sorry no idea.

Hope that helps,

Luke

If anyone has old copies of Bosley`s catalogues, Lot 1069 in the sale of 5th August 1998 is "Queens Bays William IV officers waist belt plate and shoulder scales"

The badge is this thread is very similar ( but not identical ) to the device on the waist belt plate which is described as "Large rectangular gilt plate bearing silver crowned William IV cypher within a laurel wreath, across the base of the wreath,a two part scroll inscribed Dieu et mon droit "

P.B.
