FAA Air Fitter 'I' - what was 'I'? - British & Commonwealth Military Badge Forum

I recently acquired this photograph, featuring a Leading Air Fitter of the Fleet Air Arm with trade designation 'I'.

I am familiar with 'A' Airframes, 'E' Engines, 'L' Electrical and 'O' Ordnance; as well as later 'F' Fitter and 'R' Rigger. Also, have come across 'funnies' with 'C', 'D' and 'Q', but not until now 'I'.

Any insights welcome!

Could the "I" be for INSTRUMENTS ??

It looks like a 'modified' Electrical "L" badge ?

"I" instructor ?

Yes, could be a modified 'L'.

On a related note, I have a Leading Air Fitter 'D' patch, on which the 'D' looks to be a modified 'L' (see images).

Is't collecting badges interesting when you have not got a clue about what you have i your hand. I posted this photoograph of "funnies" a while ago note some are FAA.

As well as collecting 1WW badges, I collect photographs of any unusual badge to do with my specialist subjects, This give credence to any unusual badge I find or confirms something.

My best guess for the badge would be instruments
