Default Train Locomotive badge from WW1 Hate Belt

This was one of the badges from an original period collected Canadian WW1 Hate Belt I recently acquired. The remainder of the badges were all Canadian and British with a few German Kokades etc. This one has me stumped, it is not Canadian that I am aware of, measures 22 mm tall by 35 mm long. Any thought would be welcome. I will be parting with it in the future.

At first glance I thought it might have been a collar badge to the Cheshire (Railway) Battalion RE, which was a TF unit recruited from the London and North Western Railway Company. But closer inspection seems to suggest not, unless the difference could be attributable to something like maker's variation, though that seems unlikely:

Question Fixings

The fixings suggest an officers badge.

Default H8 belt

The design of engine reminds me of a Trench/ Light rail narrow gauge stock.

The fixings are the same for WW1 interpreters badges so it is likely to be worn on a sleeve.

It doesn't look British at all, Continental more like. The chimney looks too short though, has it been broken off?. I wonder if maybe it originally had a spark arrestor on it. Nice little badge all the same.

Have found this photograph among a group of Imperial German postcards which were an unwanted part of an Auction lot and under a glass the Locomotive badge you have shown seems a very good match.

Apologies for the image quality but it's about the best I can get from an already poor photograph.

Regards Simon.

Sorry to spoil the party but they are not the same as the badge in the opening post. Different wheel arrangement, shorter cab and less top furniture.

Hoot,

I didn't mean to infer that this was an exact match, just that it bore a very good resemblance to the one shown, I have to say that under a glass it is very similar, same amount of wheels and top furniture imho. The image I have here just isn't clear enough I'm afraid, apologies.

Simon.
