A new veteran's memoir has recently been published -
Apps' War, Active Service in the 21st Tank Brigade, 1939-45 by Bill Applebee. Bill served initially in 42RTR but a chance encounter in the Bn office after a bout of German Measles meant his war changed, instead of going on to further tank training he was snapped up by Bn HQ and in the summer of 1940 transferred to 21st Army Tank Brigade where he stayed for the rest of the war. His memoirs therefore cover the whole of the war and are unusual in that they are from someone who served in a tank brigade HQ. He tells of the structure and the work that went on at HQ.
Self-published (very short print run) in February, it is available direct, send enquiries to
appswar2@outlook.com, and costs £20 + £5p&p in the UK - softback, illustrated, 547pp which includes a reproduction of Brig Dawnay's Summary of Operations, Italy 15 Aug 1944 - 29 Apr 1945.
