Default Manufacturers name on badges, packaging etc

I recently asked a seller about Makers names on badges (badges are A/A) and I received the following reply:- I quote
Hello
There are no makers names on these. The MOD have stopped manufacturers putting names on packets and sliders as it is advertising.
regards
End quote
I have left the sellers name off. Is this now standard practice? Does this include backs of badges? Can a member verify this please?

Jerry

Jerry,

What the seller says is correct. The MoD now (and have for some time) stipulated as part of their contract, that items supplied must not be maker marked in any way.

Interesting ! I'd be very interested to know exactly what year manufacturers names were left off.

Oh my! Whilst no way at all disputing it, it does seem odd that the MOD appears happy to display manufacturers names/logos like IVECO and MAN on the front of extremely large and very obvious army trucks for example, but have a problem when they are on discreet and hidden cap badge sliders.

The MOD thought process behind that one is a mystery.

I don't have my notes with me re: source but I think it was officially documented in 2012 for both item and all packaging.

No reason was given.

I came across it when researching into modern 'New Metal' cap badges.

Chris

I have a Light Division band badge (Ox and Bucks LI bugle horn) thats unmarked. I was given it by somebody that is now in the Rifles band. Its unmarked on the slider and frankly the back looks like a very cheaply made restrike.

I've got one of those in unopened official packaging!

A very interesting badge.
The official dies were no longer available, so the MoD opted for an existing copy/fake die to be used instead.

There are MANY more unmarked badges out there than ever ordered or worn by the band. So, without official packaging or provenance, how do you know whether one of these is LI band or made for the market?

Hi Thomas,

The Light Division Band badge came in Firmin packaging just that it looks quite cheap in thin, hollowback silver coloured metal with a brass coloured slider.

Quality is erm, not the best.

I'm away at the mo but when I get back I'll put some piccies of it in its unopened bag on the forum.

Regards,

Chris

Here are some packaging examples:
1. FIRMIN clearly marked 'old style' sealed plastic dated 30/11/2011 from LONDON REGIMENT cloth embroidered title
2. Anonymised Royal Lancers paper label on embroidered arm badge dated 25/05/2017
3. Anonymised Royal Lancers collar badges 'new style' sealed plastic dated 24/01/2017
4. Anonymised Royal Lancers shoulder titles 'new style' sealed plastic dated 18/08/2017

Of course none of the items are maker marked as being cloth or fitted with lugs.

Note the close sequencing of the Royal Lancers contract numbers - all made by FIRMIN for the amalgamation of the QRL with 9/12L

Just a point of interest.
I found the Firmin packaging far better ,as it gives far more information than that of TKS or LB and B.
