Hello Tony

I have tracked down an illustration of this button in an article by Dixon Pickup in 'Button Lines' on "Early Cavalry Buttons Excavated in South East England". Your button is described as "most likely the predecessor of the c.1810 ball button with the incised design of 'L' over 'VIII' over 'D'.".
