Default COLDITZ TV Series

Just watching episode 1 of the Colditz TV series. The main character "Pat Grant" i.e. Pat Reid is played by Edward Hardwicke. At the start he was wearing an RE cap badge, 45 minutes into the episode it has changed to the RASC. Pat Reid was in the RASC so now technically correct. Also in evidence were 51st Highland Division red HD on blue square formation badges being worn on battle dress in a 1940 just after Dunkirk scene.

G-G-A

I expect a few of the forum members from the Yorkshire region recognised a lot of the scenery during the 'on-the-run' sequence. It was certainly more Barnsley than Bavaria.

When they actually get to Colditz legend has it that much of the exterior TV filming took place at Scarborough Barrack, Osnabruck but was it Calver Mill Derbyshire and Stirling Castle Scotland?

Didnt prisoners actually make cast examples of cap badges to replace lost ones in POW camps ?

I am sure I have read about this in the past but cannot remember if it happened at Colditz.

I don't think that the HD badge was worn by the "Highway Decoraters" in 1940.

Just watching the final episode, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hadn't seen it since I was a kid.

Anyone know what Col. Preston's badge was on the red cord boss? I couldn't quite make it out. I vaguely remember someone saying he wasn't a regular when he first arrived in the camp.

Also, a friend has a lead moulded Royal Ulster Rifles badge on a safety pin which was supposedly made in a POW camp.

The war museun in Johannesburg have a South African Irish cap badge made by a POW, which has been hand cut from a mess tin.

A terrific series which I missed when it first broadcast as I was in Germany.

I think Lt Col Preston (played by Jack Hedley) was portraying a Territorial officer from a 'black button rifle regiment'. His cap badge was a silver device on a red cord boss and looked a little like K&K 2410 - Queen Victoria's Rifles KRRC. That would fit the story line as the 1st QVR (although lightly equipped with motorcycles in a recce role) were lost with 30th Infantry Brigade during the defence of Calais in May 1940.
The real Senior British Officers (SBO) at Colditz were:
Lt Col Guy German - Leicesters
Lt Col Willie Tod - Royal Scots Fusiliers

Same with me. I also have just watched both series and thouroughly enjoyed them, not only for the historical story line (with a little script writers licence), but for the production. Why can't we have more excellent TV drama like this? Money I suppose.
