Royal Horse Guards
Please could someone give me an idea on the timeline for this button. From others I have I can make out that it's by Nutting, King St. Covent Garden.
Cavalry not being in my area. I do know of course that it's Georgian. Thanks in anticipation. |

Hi there,
The only real reference of any kind I could find about this button in my limited library, was in Parkyn's book. It states: "The Royal Horse Guards button, with the exception of the change in the shape of the crown, has remained practically unchanged, the design being the letters "R H G" surmounted by a crown. Mr P. W. Reynolds states that this design was displayed in 1798." Hope that helps abit. Cheers Ian |

The back mark would date anywhere between 1800 and 1837, when the crown changed.
Post 1840 they were bought up by Sherlocks. There isn't any firm dates for that style of back mark to close the gap much as they seem to overlap several variations, but have a different one pre 1800 |

Thanks both,
I had looked at Parkyn but didn't know about the Sherlocks buy up. At least it gives me a cut off date even without the change of crown. Diolch, Kevin Last edited by 41st; 19-08-13 at 09:42 PM. |
