Default Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2023

No doubt members have seen the recent publicity about this years poppies being made from paper and therefore eco friendly.

Last week the local Royal British Legion Volunteers in Hythe, Kent were delivering collection tins and boxes of poppies to high street shops and businesses.
I asked a lady volunteer if I could see one of the ‘new’ poppies. When she opened the sealed box we found it contained the usual poppy with green plastic stem and black centre. She said it was likely that these were from last years stocks which of course needed to be used up and not wasted.

Tim , the RBL has said that supplies this year would be "mixed" between the old and new poppies so possibly another box had the new ones. Some areas may be using up old stock first.

My local Poppy Appeal stall had had both types.

Was busy collecting for the Poppy Appeal over the weekend and we had an amount of the new all paper ones, but primarily still the paper / plastic mix to use up and not waste.

Cheers……John

I got one of the paper ones (right) from a seller in Falkirk today, the one on the left I got in Greggs last week. TBH I prefer the metal badges as these don't look they'll take day to day wear.

How to attach the new eco poppy is up to the individual but is there any guidance? I guess options are pin the stem to clothing at the top of the stem, or attach a pin to clothing then like the plastic poppy pull the stem through the gap between clothing and pin, though unlike the plastic stem there is nothing to secure the card stem from falling off. I think the new poppies may be found problematic to attach quickly. Regards, Paul

They are. I am frequently asked by members of the public purchasing poppies to assist them with attachment. Because the paper poppy stem is attached to the bottom of the lower poppy leaf, if you ‘thread’ a pin through clothing and then insert the new poppies stem it sits too high, with high potential to fall out with movement. Same thing if you try sliding the paper stem (which has to be folded) into a button hole.

The answer ends up being to pin through the lower poppy leaf, rendering the stem a bit pointless.

Still the public seem to like the eco friendly aspect of the new poppies, but most people ultimately favour the metal pin badges from collecting so far this year and has been that way for a few years now.

Cheers……John

According to the RBL website :
Quote:
It can be fastened with a pin in the stem or worn in a buttonhole.
I'll just wear this years dated poppy pin !

In the past the RBL have also had the 'stick-on' version but no mention of that type on their website.
