Thank you gents for all your comments and contributions.

I'm really thrilled that we have been able to (at least with reasonable confidence) identify the unit. As to date - then I think Bryan's comments of 1901-4 are about as close as we can guess. From my perspective 'Boer War period' is close enough.

I'm thrilled that it has been such an interesting photograph to discuss. I have a small collection of Lee-Metford/Lee-Speed period rifle images and that was my motivation in acquiring this one.

The badge is a Glasgow I.Y. which is not recorded in any published work to my knowledge. Very nice to find a picture of it in wear. Note amongst other subtle difference to the TY badge this one has a closed crown.

Keith Hook has one in his collection complete with the rosette backing which comprises a thin dark blue outer and red inner section with a circular yellow band running through the middle of the red portion.

If anyone is interested I can ask if he minds me posting the picture he sent me.
