Hello Iain,
Prior to the Union, which I suggest your badge is, almost everything, members of that colonies Volunteers and Militia wore, was both made and retailed, here in Great Britain, badges, buttons, titles, uniforms themselves and so on.
That particular badge is like all the others of the period, the reason why I asked if it was altered was simply because it looks rather odd, the way that some of the letters are not joined at the bottom?

Edwardian crown. It was an NMR cap, so I assume an officer who got to staff rank, maybe an ex-OC?
