Gents, can anyone date this cap badge for me? It has a clear crimp mark on the slider, which is generally a mark associated with Great War issue items, but I don't know if this extends to New Zealand made/issued badges too.

Many thanks

Bess

Hello Bess,
I would say this is a WW2 issue but others may correct me. The slider is fairly short and "heavy" unlike other sliders I have seen for this badge.
Cheers, John

Hello Bess again,
Here are some ONWARD badges for comparison. The two on the left are WW1 vintage, the two on the right are WW2.

On the back of Bess’ question is it therefore right to assume that WW1 period NZ GS badges are lugged and that badges with sliders are later. I have recently acquired the badge below which has a reinforcement bar behind the slider.

Hi,
Your badge is WW2 period.
However, some "ONWARD" badges were with sliders in WW1 period as shown in this example.
John

PS Here is a link to a slidered "ONWARD" badge of WW1 vintage:

Here is a better picture of the badge (with so called oak leaves) mentioned in previous post, wrongly attributed to the British Section by Corbett in his book.
Cheers, John
