Queen’s for Scrutiny
Arrived today - comments invited…
IMG_8610.jpg IMG_8611.jpg QRWS: one-piece, Firmin-made (no MM), looped cap badge. Cannot quite tell if this badge is blackened (i.e. 5th Bn), or not. Absence of overlaid scroll suggesting it was perhaps intended as a blackened badge - loops indicating too early for 1916 all-G/M, of course. Just to add: I have, to date, never encountered a 1916 all-G/M example from this Firmin die. Comments/observations etc. welcomed. Regards, JT Last edited by Jelly Terror; 05-02-24 at 01:36 PM. |

I think you’re correct JT in that it’s a somewhat worn / tired BB finish to a 5th Battalion badge.
Mine below. The blacking finish is also quite worn in places. Did attribute mine as being potentially earlier in date owing to the nice thick gauge metal evident from the edges of the scrolls. |

Was also thinking possibly one of the VB battalions; unsure if those units would have been issued badges with just ‘The Queen’s’ as well as badges bearing designated battalion scrolls. JT |

Thanks JT, I do like it.
Funny you mention V.B. I did think mine (and yours) could be of that era but I didn’t want to sound like I was getting carried away. From memory the 1st V.B. wore a blackened badge, a bespoke die later but I’ve seen examples with the ‘standard’ QRWS badge in BB plus the small tagged on 1st V.B. scroll below. Did they wear a just that ‘standard’ badge in BB first for a time sans scroll? The 2nd V.B. I believe also wore a BB bespoke badge. So possibilities there before that die was cut perhaps. |

I have scrutinised it and can say the following with some authority
1. It is a badge 2. It is to the Queens Royal Regiment- West/Posher Surrey. Hope that helps Matti (You’ve missed me ?) |

As always Matti, a concise and well thought out appraisal of an item submitted for consideration.
Yes, you have been missed. Regards. Brian |

On a more serious note,
1. There are bespoke badges for the VB and TF battalions 2. Soldiers would have been issued with ‘x’ number of badges What do you do if there is a) a shortage of badges b) you lose a badge Squaddies will buy spares and you maybe told to paint a badge black or the battalion May blacken a batch in house. That is my logic. I do have two more recent examples of this from my own time at 87 Sig Sqdn and Robin Hoods ACF |

Thank you, Matti.
Personally I’ve missed the Matti history safaris; hoping we will be seeing those making a return soon. JT |
