I'm helping a friend identify these so any help will be appreciated.

Would the design of button identify the unit?

It is a specific design, so it should.

I'm probably "seeing things", but possibly a stringed bugle in the centre of the button?

Without being able to see the buttons, it would appear that they are not military, but perhaps diplomatic?

The button appears to say "Commissariat Staff".
1850's - 60's?

My records say for this design:
lined background: 1820-1826
plain background: 1826-1850
lined background: 1859-1869 (see scan)

Thank you for your help so far. From what I can deduce, these were uniformed civilians but I would assume that there had to be some sort of hierarchy. Would these indicate a particular "rank"?
