Double badge backing on a DCLI cap badge
A recent addition, with red and green badge backing, this badge has loops E-W.
Any ideas when it was worn? Thanks Rob |

Only the red backing should be present. I don't know why it has that piece of green material, but it was not something worn in service to my knowledge.

Double badge backing on a DCLI cap badge
CB, thanks for your reply, this came along with a small collection I bought a few weeks ago, I wondered whether it was worn when all the Light Infantry Regiments post WWII wore green shoulder titles with yellow lettering, I believe there was a standardisation of buttons, white metal with a bugle horn as well.
Having visited the DCLI museum a few years back I don't recall this badge with a two colour backing being on show. Rob |

The green will be part of a rifle green Light Infantry beret.
What size is the badge Rob ? |

Double badge backing on a DCLI cap badge
Mike,
It's a full size badge, loops East and West. Rob |

That badge looks silver or silver plated, officer's badge?

I thought that Alex. The larger badge fell out of use in the latter years of the Regiment. The badge reduced in size to just a bit larger than the small collar.

It was only the DCLI Officers badge which shrunk after WW2, unlike the Som LI which adopted an ORs version of the officers smaller badge in 1930.
A 2inch green square was worn behind the badge in the latter half of WW2, here by RSM Philp of 5 DCLI: Screenshot 2022-07-12 at 11.09.43.jpg However only an officers lugged badge is likely to have been worn in WW2. Which brings up the inevitable question Rob - what does the back of the badge look like? |

DCLI cap badge
David, Good to hear from you, believe it or not I haven't looked at the reverse of this badge, I simply put it on my DCLI board and it is now filed away.
I will have to dig it out and put pics up of the reverse. Best Regards Rob |

DCLI cap badge
Curiosity got the better of me and I have dug the badge out and here are the pics.
The badge has copper loops, so I do not think it is an officers, the backing is one-piece. Your thoughts appreciated. Rob |

One thing I have learnt in my collecting is there will always be items that don’t conform to the norm whether badges or other items, there is still an awful lot of information about insignia that has not yet been recorded ( it’s one of the things that makes our hobby so I interesting/obsessive)
With hindsight I have disposed of a number of items I didn’t think were right only to discover they were right and scarce. P.

Could be a backing for the slouch hat, although to the best of my knowledge 2MIC had a red backing for the entire badge rather than an insert and no green backing at all: Screenshot 2022-07-12 at 14.06.55.jpg As Peter wisely says the best policy is to keep it. |

Absolutely right, staying on my DCLI board until further notice.

The badge is a typical Victorian/early Edwardian other ranks cap badge on loops and very well made. Could have been worn after that time of course. regards
