Default Canadian Red Ensign 1907-1922

Thought I’d submit photos of this patriotic banner before it gets traded away.

It is 68 x 39 inches. I’ve called it a patriotic banner because as you can see from the fading on one side that it was hanging somewhere. It also doesn’t have the hardware to be hung as a flag, but rather it is stitched so that a dowel could be used to hang it vertically. Apparently, flags were made of this design (google Cochrane Museum and Red Ensign, sorry don’t know how to link the articles).

This design for a flag was unofficial at the time. Canada didn’t have its own flag and used the Union Jack. The time period for this design was 1907 to 1921/2. 1907 was two years after Canada got two new provinces (Saskatchewan and Alberta). Canada then had nine provinces and each province was represented on the shield of the banner. Canada finally got to fly a new and official version of the Red Ensign on government buildings in 1924.

I have a couple of questions.

What type material is the design printed on and is the process simply called printing?

I would like to know how prevalent it was as a patriotic banner. If you watch the movie Passchendaele near the end during the hospital scene you will see a flag/banner hanging on the wall. Does anyone have photographs of messes, Legions, hospitals, etc. with this banner on the wall that they would share here?

Please, feel free to correct my history or add to it

Upon viewing the Cochrane Museum flag I see the it has a king's crown at the top which I would expect for the period.

Is the crown on the flag I have a product of the manufacture's imagination or is it representative of something?
