Default Forum thanks...

Hi All

I first would like to thank this wonderful forum...... for all the help over the years its been so valuable to my collecting, to me and to my Regiments history.

Secondly I would like to thank Ian >>4966Ian<< for sending me a PM a few weeks ago...... telling me that an item(s) of the PAO Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry had appeared in an auction listing in Essex ....... a "heads up".

Today I was in Essex bidding on that very object and brought it home...... and here it is ......how it should look (its in a bit of a state at the moment):-

This has been missing from the Regiment for over 100 years and today its been reunited with its Regiment and County so that it can be fully restored and hung for display in the Rutland Museum.

All thanks to this forum and a kind member of it....... thank you Ian

Some details photos...... the standard is basically held together with lots of thread. At some point in its early retirement its hung on a wall. Then, after some years, a wife has decided to make it into a fashionable fire stand...... and kept on repairing it as it steadily fell to bits.

The original dimensions are approx' : 65cm x 55cm.

Its hard to be accurate as the outer edges have been cut away to make it into fire guards.

Remember that only "one" was made (Sovereigns Standard) in 1844 along with four other (less expensive painted ) Troop standards...... I think there would have been a "Provincial" Standard as well (we are not sure what that looked like). It is very possible that this Royal Standard was touched by Queen Victoria on (or before) its presentation. We know that Lady Georgina Curzon had the standards made at the time.

*New Colours were presented to the Regiment in 1844 by Lady Georgina Curzon" (Army & Navy Gazette 1898 : The Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry).

Hi Griff,

Aw shucks. . . . Thanks.

To be honest, there is only place this should be and I am so glad you managed to acquire this important item for the Museum.
Like everybody else, I am looking forward to seeing what this will look like after its 'sympathetic' restoration.

Cheers

Ian

Leicester Chronicle, 28th September 1844...... the presentation of x5 Troop Standards. Day of presentation :- Thursday 26th of September 1844. http://www.paoyeomanry.co.uk/LeicsChron.htm

This article also confirms the actual date of the new uniform (Bell top shako) as well

Did the Leicester Chronicle later merge with the Daily Mail as the standard of journalism is about the same?

Still, the Yeomanry are but jolly farmers and peaceable tradesmen, "playing at soldiers", to the admiration of their wives, daughters, sweethearts, and friends; they are not well drilled "men of war".
