Thank you Steve!
That is what I’m hoping it is but I would rather hold back for to be sure, Kind regards Chay |

the naming looks good to me but here's the thing; as a general rule most medals for the Crimean War were issued un-named unless you were a casualty, in which case they were officially named. If you were still serving, your medal would be issued at regimental level, i.e. sent to your regiment and issued during a parade to those entitled to one. Some regiments chose to have the medals named at regimental level and some did not. Those named have their own style of naming, usually engraved but not always. You would need to find out if there are other known named medals to the 71st Foot. The naming on the rim of your one looks to be officially named but James Stevenson does not appear on the Crimea casualty rolls. His entry does have the word Mint in the comments section which may imply official issue. Stevenson may of course been killed in another war before the medal was issued and it may be worth checking the casualty list for the Indian Mutiny. I am not particularly happy with the clasp but it may have been added later, I will try and post some examples of various types of naming tomorrow as it is too dark to photograph now. Do you know if there is a service number on the medal? Simon |

A closer look at the medal roll shows that there were two J Stevensons in the 71st Regiment during the Crimean War: 3715 James Stevenson and 3349 John Stevenson who went on to serve during the Indian Mutiny. John Stevenson was entitled to the clasp for Sebastopol and the front of his medal has little knocks on the front right (as you look at it) consistent with knocking against another medal.
To sum up I think that the medal coming up for auction belonged to 3349 John Stevenson, 71st Regiment who was also entitled to an Indian Mutiny medal. Despite the clasp, I would be happy to bid on this medal if I collected Crimean War medals. Last edited by High Wood; 07-03-18 at 06:39 PM. |

The seller has measured it and he says it is perfect so I can assume it isn’t renamed |

I don’t either , it’s a strange one I was hoping it could be a tailors made type a long shot but I can only do better photos if I buy it, Scottish silversmiths are good at their work if that’s what it is, but who knows , I am close to buying them from the help so far. Looking at the photos I can the clasp is cast and I wish I had a 3D microscope for my computer and the skills to use it ! But thinking about it the clasp is not cast from an official awarded example? Kind regards Chay |

I have read of a lot of contemporary rearranging and modification of the Sultan's Crimea medal as awarded to British recipients. Case in point is my own specimen, which I had posted some time ago on the forum. To wit, the 2 rings were removed and replaced with the ornate (British) Criimea Medal suspender. Ribbon 25mm. 'Sebastopol' clasp placed on this ribbon! If the recipient was happy with this setup then I bviously can't complain.

I have been collecting medals for the last 20 odd years and I see no problem with any of them. There is no sign of name filing on the rim from the images sent.
Basically what High Wood stated I confirm. |
