WW1/WW2?? Badges/caps
Hi there. Im new to this and doing it from my phone so may muck up sometimes. I have a collection of badges on a belt that has been in our family for as long as I can remember. I found a page on FaceBook and posted an image of each badge and out of the twenty+ pictures three of them received quite a bit of interest and somebody recommended I get myself on here and so here I'am. The information I would appreciate is (1) What the badge is, and its history (2) What its value is to the best of your knowledge (3) Where I might be able to take it to preserve it (as in museum/collectors etc). Thankyou.

Third across the top is the Border regiment. Hundreds on ebay and I buy them for between £3-£7
I have a few but would always buy more |

The three valuables badges if confirmed authentic are: The Drake battalion, the Hawke battalion and the 11th battalion Border Regiment. However all three badges are much copied and you would need to show photographs of the backs to get an opinion on their authenticity.

Those three look fine to me, the Lonsdale possibly silver too? Very valuable!

That belt could well be worth a high three to four figure sum?

Agree. The Notts artillery shoulder title is a nice item too.

Thanks guys. For those interested the 11th Battalion badge is genuine, its silver and is hallmarked on the back. May I ask, it might seem a daft question but does the belt need all badges on it to be of any value?? Heres some pics of that badge...

No, basically in monetary terms the belt breaks down into the sale value of the individual badges.
Not that I'm suggesting you do that - it's another little piece of history gone if it's "broken up", but it's not my property or decision (having said that, I would'nt just peel the most common one off and flog it for 3 quid). |

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, it doesnt make sense to take them all off really does it. This was my Great Grandads who gave it to my Dad whose passed it down to me and like you say theres the general history of it anyway which is two very good reasons. I cant say that im not a little intrigued by the interest of a few of them though, especially the 11th Battalion number given that Lonsdale handed these ones out himself if ive got that right?

...any ideas what the Notts badge could be worth to the right collector? Cheers.

Museums would take the belt, others can advise on which museum to choose. Perhaps Great Grandads regiment or the IWM?
It may be some years ago, but I am aware of a regimental museum which threw out in the garbage items including WWI German stick grenades and documents signed by the Duke of Wellington, another which cut badges off uniforms stored and not on display and sold them off through the museums shop ( mainly to a local dealer). I don't know the value of the Notts shoulder title. Break the belt down into individual badges, the value lies in only a few of them, if genuine, (about 1000?) others being a few quid each. |

I wish there was more faith in museums. We are responsible and desperately trying to save the nation's heritage on a small budget - too many pieces are being lost abroad.

Quote:
It would have to be related to the Regiment in some way. Maybe the Regimental Museum of your Grandads Regiment, if he was in the Army, would accept it with provenence. regards
