Smile 6th New South Wales Mounted Rifles Band - circa 1952

Hi Guys,

Here's a very interesting picture - the band of the 6th New South Wales Mounted Rifles on the march. The interesting thing is that the regiment is a Royal Australian Armoured Corps regiment yet the band is a Scottish band and wear kilts etc and black berets! A most unusual combination!

It was taken around 1952 (when they wore the Rising Sun badge - their own white metal badge wasn't worn until after 1953/1954). I was told on good authority (by a mate who spoke to the photographer who was the Adjutant of the regiment back then) that the band (being a local CMF (reserve)) unit recruited a local Scottish band to be the regimental band.

Certainly very interesting!

Mick
