Rockape. Can you tell me more about the dating of the loops. There are two types on this badge one longer to reached in to the back of the crown and maintain a parallel split pin.

This badge was customarily worn with a rosette on the slouch hat but also as on this Boer War trooper and this Lieutenant's service hat in 1901 in the Transvaal.

Yes this badge is a casting with the SS fettled and polished. The split line of the mould can be seen here.



Does this lug tell the fake spotters anything. Is it modern or period etc?



My question remains, if it is a fake/copy, what is it a fake/copy of?

At 14% smaller than the slouch hat badge, was there ever a collar version of the 'Crowned SS'? The Sharpshooter museum does not appear to have one.

It may be a naive question but if it is a fake, with all the time, tooling and expense required, shouldn't there be a number of these in circulation?

Yes, I wonder if the smaller version seen here used the lost wax casting method of manufacture, hence the loss. The brass looks new, and reminds me of a set of buttons I had done whilst in service.

As for the the SS without crown; doesnt the Men at Arms series of booklets (Sharpshooters) mention that the 21st Batt wore the SS crown whilst the 18th Batt wore the SS alone on the rosette?

hi Guys
what are your thoughts on this item?
only got the front pic at the moment.
sold as a collar but it looks bigger than a collar and i don't think this style was worn as a collar.
it has 3 lugs on the rear.
to me it looks like a slouch hat badge and from the front pic has the look of a genuine item
will add some extra pics when it arrives
im also interested in reading up on this badge/unit if someone could send me in the right direction

Looks like a cast copy to me.

Most likely a fake as mentioned, but without seeing the reverse, cannot be sure. The serifs on the badge in the photo are more prominent and squared off than this one.

Just from the obverse photograph you show, I would say original, the badge appears to be made in three parts, so provisionally well done!

to me it definately doesnt look cast. it looks to be made in 3 parts as mentioned but i do agree without the back pic i cant be sure.
i did compare it with Les Martins and agree its very simmilar.

Need to look at the back to be 100% but from what I can see I’d rate your chances around 80:20 in favour of it being genuine.
