Default Sweetheart, Boer War Trench or Souvenir ?

Came across this nice brass badge in a drawer. A pick, shovel, and rope with South Africa engraved on the shovel blade. No makers mark and a stout pin to the reverse.
Not sure if it is a Boer war item, a sweetheart brooch or a regular souvenir item.
Any ideas ?

I saw a number of these before I eventually bought one, and also have never been sure exactly what it is. I am interested in Boer POW coin jewellery and this is obviously a well made commercial production. Very nice whatever it is.
The brass German-made Boer leaders' penknives are another attractive commercial souvenir.

They are just brooches that were sold across the Rand throughout the first quarter of the twentieth century, they do vary in terms of quality.
