What you have there sir i believe, is a hat to a member of the Great Britain Rifle Team, i don't believe they use them today, but stand to be corrected, certainly still in use in the 1970's. Regards Mark

Thank you for your interesting reply, but I am not sure what the Great Britain Rifle Team were doing in Burma in 1944.

I was rather hoping that there was a Royal Naval connection.

Post war, alot of the GB Target Rifle teams were ex-Military or Still serving Military, no reason why they wouldn't re-purpose their slouch hat if it was a favourite, instead of buying a new one, the colours are correct but the wrong way round! my apologies.
Best Regards - Mark.

Thank you for the update; the slouch hats that they are wearing have much thicker black bands.

My slouch hat came with several items of uniform and a name that would suggest service in a special capacity in Burma. I didn't want to influence anyone's thought process by mentioning the R.N. connection, but the cat is out of the bag now.

Can anyone confirm that Royal Naval personnel wore a dark blue band on the pagri of their slouch hats?

Yes, the RN did sometimes wear a dark blue band in the Pagri, in just that manner. However, I believe some other units may have as well, in conjunction with badge or flash.

a blue upper fold on the pug band is associated with the RN in my years of studying slouch hats and sun helmets

I think the RAAF used a blue fold, not the top one though, middle one of the folds I think. Regards, Paul.

Many thanks for the update, I am certain that it is R.N. issue as it came with many named items of uniform and a 1919 Naval pattern back pack.

There is an amazing story attached to these items, but I have given my word to the person that gave them to me that I wouldn't divulge the original owner's name.

Sufficient to say that he was involved in a Combined Operations Pilotage Party that didn't go to plan.
