hi frenchy
thanks for the reply it would seem they are genuine, however, i wonder if the orriginal owner had them gilt plated for his display and plated over the whitemetal? anyway, any thoughts on what they would be worth? BC |

Yes both are Irish,
the grenade being one part of the 2 part Royal Irish Fusiliers forage cap badge and the other Te Royal Irish Regiment (18th). The Royal Irish Regiment looks OK - has it been coated too?, it looks as if it has. The RIF is missing its coronet. A non-coated Royal Irish Regiment would be between 35 - 30 GBP, A complete and un-coated RIF (2 piece) would be about 20 GBP. The coating on these reduces the values considerably. Attached below is a photo of a Royal Irish , This is a Smith & Wright example with strengthener (sorry I do not have a picture of the back and it is currently in a frame), On the right a complete other ranks RIF (with the larger of the 3 types of coronet). I am sceptical about the grenade of the Royal Irish Fusiliers as it is all brass and this badge was never produced in an all brass varient. The angel and plumes should be overlaid in white metal, hence in the brass base stamping there should be either a braze hole or hole for a wire fastener. Luke |

As the RIF design was so long lived it does appear without sweat holes or pinned construction. As BC says this appears to have been coated (which ruins the value).
You are right in that the RIF did not have a 1916 all brass economy. The fake below is what some individuals pass off an a RIF economy. It is based on lugged economy collars (of which I only know of two existing pairs, both in Northern Ireland) |

You are certainly right there. As there was a Royal Irish Regiment next to the RIF I assumed BC was after WW1 badges hence a braze hole would be present 99 times out of 100. I didn't read the part about them being coated either, my bad. Cheers, Luke |

If anyone had any doubt that these badges are fakes then i enclose this picture with the dodgy gaunt mark. I don't believe that the RIF had an economy bagde either. Alan |
