Any Ideas?
Probably not military, but any ideas? 'MR' and '1938' top and bottom, and 'PSL' in the centre.

OK, Calling all navy types. I've had a suggestion from another source that it is possibly a badge worn by the Merchantile Marine Reserve when on 'Permanent Shore Leave' for whatever reason. It still doesn't explain the 'MR' unless it is for something like 'Merchant Reserve' or the year date, if indeed it is a date.

John .. don't know if you ever came up with the answer to this but here's my take on it:
MR stands for the Mersey Railway company and PSL was the code for Port Sunlight station. MR operated the line and service before all the amalgamations took place in 1948. The only significance I can attach to 1938 is the centenary year of this company. ____________________ Regards Mel. (Nobby 21) |

How sad am I - registered just to answer this 5 year old question - the badge described is a Personal Service League (PSL) Nursing Badge - the MR is the monogram of the PSL's founder, the Marchioness of Reading (Stella Issacs). I'm not sure of the significance of 1938 although it was in 1938 that Home Secretary Samuel Hoare sent for Lady Reading and requested that she establish an organisation of women that would assist the government and local authorities if war were declared.Lady Reading founded the Women’s Voluntary Service for Air Raid Precautions Services, later referred to simply as the Women's Voluntary Service or by the acronym WVS.
