BTW, story 4) above is funny but probably not true. When the Chindits took mules into Burma, behind Japanese lines, they had the Indian Veterinary Corps sever their vocal cords so they couldn't bray, which seems a lot of work - and not much fun for the mules - if simply tying down their tails would work!
[1] Saw the Mule (kinder) story somewhere this year.
Trying to relocate it. (Probably in a Regtl History or
in a Tofrek or NWF N & M reprint.)

[2] Another improbable but true (?) story seen on the
net ~ 15 yrs ago was about London at the height of
WW II: There was this well, 'lady' dog marched up to
the CO with a formal, duly filled in Offence Report.
Punishment - "deprived of biscuits for one week "
for being on ' friendly terms ' with a civilian pooch.
( Can't get the link now , but maybe on an old hard
disk if I can connect it somehow. )

Didn't I read somewhere that the regimental goat of the Welsh Guards was reduced in rank for trying to have improper relations with a drummer, whilst on parade? Apparently in the presence of HRH the Queen too! So, Guardsmen no longer have to salute him, as he is no longer a Corporal. Or so the story went!

I suppose the mule story could be true, but it seems a bit improbable IMHO. Enquiries will be instituted.

Well, eating humble pie here!

Here it is, apparently from the mule's mouth:

I would add, in defence of my suspicions, and my not so kinf story, that this account does have the 'jack' braying with its tail immobilized, given sufficient incentive!
