Does this mean that the white slip-on was the equivalent of the white hat band, gorget patches, etc, worn by officer cadets in other British Commonwealth nations?

I have just come across a number of photos of Indian Mule Corps personnel in the Great war, at a Facebook site called "From the Sea to the Somme". Unless my aged eyes deceive me, the sepoys are not wearing any insignia on their shoulders at all.
