Cheshire & Carnarvon Port Squadron
I had this badge in my RA album thinking it was something to do with the 1st Cheshire & Carnarvon Artillery Volunteers as shown on the plate below.
Luckily Brookies, aka Jonathan, was idly reviewing my albums and something triggered his memory. After checking with "the old man" he referred me to lot 500 in Bosleys' 30th Jan, 2008 catalogue. Low and behold a similar example listed as Port Squadron Royal Engineers. Do any of our engineer collectors have any information that can support this please and if so date worn would be very useful. Thanks in advance. Hwyl, Kevin |

If the one in Bosleys was RE it should be Blue lettering on red.,
The two badges you show are in an RA format of red on blue. I feel the Bosleys badge is mis described and is another version of yours. regards

From my book Badges on Battle Dress
Jon In January 1957 Western Command sent the War Office designs of the new badges it wished worn by 253rd and 624th Crane Operating Squadrons, RE which, until the abolition of Coast Artillery the previous year, had been Q and R Batteries, 420th Coast Regiment. Both traced their origins to Volunteer Artillery units raised in 1859, the 253rd to the 1st Lancashire Artillery Volunteers, the 624th to the Cheshire and Caernarvonshire Artillery Volunteers. The proposed badge for 624th Squadron based on the sealed pattern issued to the CO, 1st Cheshire and Caernarvonshire Artillery on 8th December 1859 was approved, but that for 253rd Squadron featuring the arms of the Duke of Lancaster with a gun and crown was refused after much discussion, despite the Squadron’s offer to pay any additional costs. |

Thanks very much for that Jon, so we have a RE unit taking precedence from an older RA Vol unit, how unusual. It would also explain why the badge doesn’t look 140 years or so old. I’ll have to check my records for lineage but from memory don’t think 1st Cheshire & Carnarvon Vol Art was 1859 as I think that was the original Carnarvon unit. The amalgamation was later if I recall correctly.
