Default Books on buttons and collar badges?

Hi All,

I've got lots of books on badges and Westlake's work on Shoulder Titles but I am flying blind on collars and buttons.

1. What are the definitive works on collar badges?
2. Ditto buttons?
3. My Westlake edition is 1980. Is there anything new out there picking up after this period on shoulder titles?

Thanks and best wishes,

Tom

Tom,
Colin Churchill produced a book on Infantry collar badges, worth buying.

Gwen Squire also has a book on buttons which covers various aspects apart from military such as Fire Brigade, Prison etc.

Ripley (solo or with others e.g. Darmanin, Moodie) should have you covered for buttons wherever your interests may lie:

Regular Army 1855 - 2000 ISBN 0-9524461-1-1
Militia (Scotland, Wales, Channel Islands) ISBN 978-0-9524461-3-2
Local Militia ISBN 0-9524461-2-X
Yeomanry ISBN 0-9510603-8-4

There may be more by him - Googling above will likely throw them up too.

no one got an opinion or knowledge of the quality of images in the 2001 and 2002 editions?

I have the latter edition in which the illustrations are not very clear, being dark and small and not that sharp.

Its unlikely that someone has both editions with which to do a comparison.

I did think that might be the case, but I lived in hope.

I have the 2001 first printing and the photos are decent in terms of sharpness. The OSD in particular tend to be dark but details are generally visible. My understanding is that the 2002 printing was somewhat inferior, but I cannot personally confirm this.

It's worth bearing in mind that the photos are actual size; I've placed many of my collars over the corresponding image and they're almost always an exact match.

as I had to know, I bought the first edition to go with my 2002 reprint, the images seem of the same quality, many a bit dark.

I notice from a quick look that at least one change of badge image, for the RWF was made for #652.
