I response to the original question the Wilts yeo wore a mixture of hats and badges, often all at the same time, so I see no reason that K&K were not correct - just not inclusive enough of the other variants.

K&K is great reference.... but not definitive.

Major Charles Selwyn Awdry (pictured around 1908)
On the outbreak of the South African War he went to the Cape with the Imperial Yeomanry and was mentioned in Despatches. In 1904 he became a partner in the firm of W.H. Smith & Son where his father was acting senior partner and from 1905 served as JP for Wiltshire. For some years before the war he held a commission in the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry. * The same Bronzed brass collar badge as the Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry Officers in khaki. Also Major Palmer PWORWY Great War (same collar)

PWORWY AA Pattern No 19287 CB3194 Sealed 25/03/65.
Post 1960 PWORWY AA by the three of the four different makers of the period.... same badge .... but subtle differences between each makers die. I have not found a Firmin yet. There might also be a Timmings ltd ... so five? The modern Other Ranks badge (now obselete) comes from the old Officers silver gilt dress cap badge.

Many thanks to Griff & Alan O for contributing to this post.
The way I understand the lineage is: 2nd Boer War, Imperial Yeomanry until 1908 - White Metal plus Slouch Hat From 1908 - 1950's - Bimetal badge Post 1950's the different shaped Bimetal badge also in A/A Additionally a Bronze badge was ordered by the WD along with the DH in 1916. Griff shows this in numerous photos. Would I be right in assuming this was adopted when the regiment(s) adopted a Cyclist/Infantry role in 1916. Perhaps this badge distinguished the roles of the different bttns? I unfortunately cannot find anywhere or period that a gmetal badge was used, despite the pics shown by Griff. Any further info always welcome. Thanks again Andy |
