The words 'would have' reveal the conjecture. 148 RAC wore the RAC badge.

33rd Armoured Brigade / 148TH RAC
I think we are looking at just officers in these two pics.... there could be a "driver" next to the tank? But RAC in the beret for most
Taken at Stanwick in March 1944, there are the following names : "Tank Crew" J. Lomas (or Tomas (Lt) Daniel Josephs David D. (Capt.) Robert J. Buttler (Lt.) J. ? (major) A. J. Ensor (?) (Lt) B2692 David (something). Cpt. Edward John Storey (wore glasses).

L&BHY....also note their tank arm badges.
Pics attached from a small album of 10th Gloucestershire Regt/159RAC, shoulder titles appears to be 'GLOSTERS', not sure if they wore the back badge too. fellow member Jon Smith(RAC1944) has made a fairly good list of badges worn by those converted to RAC, gleaned from numerous unit histories. Fascinating thread (for a number of reasons !)
Members might be interested in some documentary sources, albeit a little ambiguous ! I assume the RAC was formed after 1937 hence its absence from this note. (I haven't yet looked up 743/49, but offer the CCN entry for 1949) ACI 2 1937 – issued week ending 6.1.37 Territorial Army Instruction. The following instructions will apply to all personnel of T.A. infantry units converted to anti-aircraft brigades R.A. and anti-aircraft battalions R.E.:- 1. General:- (a) Badges, etc, - Cap and collar badges, shoulder titles and buttons to be worn by personnel of converted units will conform with those of the new arm of service, except that units desiring to do so may retain the cap badge and regimental pattern buttons authorised at the date of conversion, on the understanding that the whole of the personnel of the unit wears the same. Scored out and marked Cancelled 743/49’ The 1949 CCN (p9) notes In cases marked * the unit actually named has ceased to exist on conversion to another role, but the badge of the old unit is still worn under the terms of ACI 2 of 1937. The arm to which the unit was converted is shown in brackets, e.g. “Scottish Horse (now R.A.)”. [1] |
