Default 17th Black top Czapka

There are images of the 17th Lancers post 1856 with a black top Czapka and black Plume this is explained in Linaker and Dine as only the plume being black 1869 - 1871 but the picture clearly shows a black top as well.
Would these black tops have been painted or was the whole Czapka be stripped and a new black leather top attached which is quiet a big job ? all help most welcome.

Mac.

Default Black top

After some research it would appear that all line Lancer Regiments had a black tops post 1856 for other ranks. However the 17th went to white around 1890. Having handled one and spoke to a few other collectors it seems they were black. Now I need to find out about the white was that painted over black ?.
