Default RECENTLY ARRIVED 5th WEALD of KENT RIFLE VOLUNTEER CORPS

Hello all,

I recently received this 5th Weald of Kent Rifle Volunteer Corps other ranks home service helmet into my collection. The helmet is as would have been worn approximately 1878 to 1883 and is in remarkable condition with a dark rifle green helmet skull and original to the helmet all bronzed fitting, helmet plate, spike and spike base and chin chain and ear rosettes. I hope you will enjoy the pictures posted here and as always, any comments or critique is welcomed and appreciated.

Cheers,

David

Hello Gary,

I was thrilled to be able to add this helmet to my collection... it only has minor service ware, but remarkable is devoid of any fading and absolutely no trace of any mothing or any other insect damage and I think, a pretty terrific example of an early Volunteer other-ranks home service helmet, THANK YOU for your observations and very thoughtful comments!!!

Cheers,

David

Hello Rob.

I appreciate your very enthusiastic comments... THANK YOU!!! My understanding from the person I acquired the helmet from is that it had been in the same family since it was issued to the original owner. It, then, apparently, spent something over 100 years tucked away in an air-tight tin (not a correct military storage/travel tin) stuck in the corner of a wardrobe in a home still owned by ancestors of the volunteer who wore it in 1878... or so!

Again, thanks for taking time to look at this post!!

Cheers,

David

Again a superb survivor of time.

I assume you can put the starting date of the badge at 1880. That is after the consolidation of the RVCs of the 5th Administrative Battalion of Kent (Weald of Kent) Rifle Volunteers into the 37th Kent (Weald of Kent) Rifle volunteer Corps and it's renumbering into the 5th Kent (Weald of Kent) Rifle volunteer Corps later the same year.

BTW there was a 5th Kent (East Kent) Rifle volunteer Corps from 1874. It was renumbered into 2nd Kent (East Kent) Rifle Volunteer Corps at the same renumbering late in 1880.

Details (as usual): Infantry Volunteers East Kent - Cinque Ports

Very discerning taste - the quality of the collection is obviously maintained by only going for high quality items ... Interesting units too, so a winning combination - thanks for sharing

Hello Mike,

THANK YOU for the very generous accolades, your comments are much appreciated! I try to not compromise on the quality of the items I bring into my collection... I strive to seek out and find the best examples of items on my "wants list" as i can find and also like to find the more obscure units as well as demonstrated with my Aberdeen City Artillery Volunteers and 2nd Midlothian and Peebles Rifle Volunteers home service helmets and my recently added Imperial Yeomanry dragoon helmet. Aagin thank you for taking time to look at this post and adding your very kind remarks and observations!!!

Cheers,

David
