Default Selous Scouts Badges

Hi,
I was after a silver Selous Scouts cap badge and had my eye on some in auction, having never had one I did a little trawling on the Forum and elsewhere, my question is should a genuine example have brass lugs?
I read that genuine examples should be brass, the ones in auction had white metal/silver so I didn't bid in the end.
Any hints/opinions would be appreciated,
All the best Gary

Hi Gary,

Yes, original silver/officers Selous Scouts cap badges should have brass lugs.

But that alone does not guarantee they are not fake, as I have seen fake badges with brass lugs.

Hope that helps.

Cheerio,
Roy

Hi Roy, many thanks for taking the time to reply. I would guess other than quality, is there any standard characteristics on the fakes to look out for?

Hi Gary,

You're most welcome mate.

Caveat - I'm no expert. However it's a tricky situation. The 1st & 2nd issue OR's badges are relatively easy to correctly identify but the silver officers are a little more tricky. From my research, I have records of a number of different versions of the marking. So I'm afraid there is no easy way that I'm aware off.

I'm planning on making an album of my modest collection which may help. I've been working on the photography, so should be ready to start uploading in a week or so.

Cheerio,
Roy

Hi Gary,
At £900 plus commission, certainly not a bargain worth gambling on. At least the auction house eventually posted pictures of the rear after we requested them. Not great photos of the rear anyway and at those hammer prices there are sure to be more dodgy ones coming on to the market. The officers rank slides also on sale were surely copies as the lions were both facing the same direction and the script for the S was definitely wrong. I have seen a few sets of these of various ranks before, which originate from Johannesburg about 10 to 15 years ago. Happy Hunting for some legit ones.
