Default Informatio St Johns Ambulance

Hello,
Does anyone know what this badge was for? I'ts 32mm lugged. Was it a cap badge/arm badge. It looks similar to the arm badge worn by Police and cap badge worn by female ambulance drivers. Perhaps it doubled as both? What period does it date from?

Thank
billyh

They were worn as an arm badge (forearm) by some police forces in white metal and chrome. I last saw one being worn by a Cheshire police sgt. in 1974. In his case it was positioned above his chevrons on one arm only. I'm not quite sure why you believe they were worn as a cap badge by female ambulance drivers (presumably St. John). They did in fact have a specifically designed badge for wear on caps. As far as I'm aware they were intended for wear on the arm by qualified police first aiders, and perhaps others.

Dave.

Default St John Ambulance

Billy, St John rather than St John's Ambulance.

Stock standard St.John Ambulance Association First Aid qualification badge worn on for-arm as mentioned in earlier post.

Worn by uniformed personal such as Police, Fireman, Railway workers who passed the first aid course done through the association.

I have not seen this worn as a cap badge...

Possibly still in the Cambridgeshire Constabulary museum collection is an old style patrol neck tunic with the St John's badge in white metal worn above the sergeants stripes on the right arm.

Thanks for the information all. Dave, the reason I thought this badge might be worn by female driver's is due to the attached photo. The badge this lady is wearing on her hat looks like the badge posted. Perhaps she put it on her hat because of a shortage?

Thanks

She looks like a cadet to me. They wore a circular cap badge if I'm not mistaken.

Correct, Cadets had a circular cap badge but design very different to the one been discussed in this thread.

Cadet cap badge below Later they had a black enamel version, succeeded by a circular cloth badge.

The later types, with a Red Cross equivalent. All the same or similar in size.

The Brigade version of the arm badge and enamel version of the Association arm badge. Also, a junior members cap badge.

All interesting stuff. So it seems the lady is a cadet and the badge on her hat would be the cadet badge, and not the type which the thread was started on. which leads me to a few more questions (sorry)

1) What was the role of the cadet ?

2) This lady wears an 8 SJAB shoulder title. Would this be a cadet unit ? or attached to a normal unit ?

3) What sort of era are we looking at ?

Thanks
billyh

Pass on all of the questions sorry.

But just an observation. The irregular shape of the plate plus poorly stamped letters and the font is very reminiscent of J.R.Gaunt makers mark plaques.
