But you were never in the army. What could you possibly remember of it?

I was in in the 60s and I don't recognise that food. We once had a cook who could spoil cornflakes but was a wizard o exercise when we were on compo.

Jo,
It does bring back memories, although not of that sort of food.
It reminded me of washing my plate, knife, fork, spoon & mug in a container of almost cold greasy water that had various bits of food waste floating in it.
In spite of the food and the hygiene we all survived, some grew fatter than others.
Thank you for showing it.
Eddie

Default Army Food - The Wessex Regt

On the same theme, but more realistic try this scene from the 1960 film League of Gentlemen - fast forward to 52 mins 34 secs. Mike

An enjoyable film and one which I have watched repeatedly over the years. The gentlemen pull off an audacious bank robbery but the social mores of the time mean that they cannot be seen to get away with their ill-gotten gains.

Mike,
Yes, that is more like the cook house food that I remembered, rubber eggs and all.

The best meal in the US Army was breakfast. They were still using real eggs in the early 70's. Any meal after that you were unsure of the food's origin.

My biggest complaint was army Turkey. As a young lad I loved Turkey but the Army turkey ruined it for me for the remainder of my life. Grissle and rubbery things which should have never appeared in turkey.

Like the Chefs hats in the video, nice touch.

Default Memories

My father told me that the most difficult course in the British Army was the cook's- as no one had ever apparently passed it!

Yes Eddie, we were always told the three main Tanks of the British Army were "Wash" "Rinse" & "Sterilize"
