1911; OTC, Junior Division Contingents -formation dates

Doing some research tonight I came across The Public School Magazine" Vol V111 July-Dec 1901 which has a 9 page article titled Badges of the Public School Corps

It contains contemporary accounts, with some illustrations, of the cap badges buttons and collar badges work by several OTCs which may be of interest to some members. The pages of interest are 381-389.

Very many thanks indeed for posting this up, it certainly sounds like a valuable resource and just the kind of thing I’ve been looking for with regard to Uppingham’s badge. Unfortunately when I follow the link things only appear in ‘Snippet view’, or at least that’s how it comes up for me! So if there happens to be a kind soul out there who can access this, or someone who already has a copy of the article in question, then I really would be most grateful if they could e-mail what it has about Uppingham please?

There is also a reference to an article in an earlier volume on uniforms which I intend to seek out. At first glance last night it seems that all previous volumes are also available.

This page lists the recognised Cadet Corps. Some are for junior boys in schools with OTCs as well. Others later became OTCs in the expansion of OTCs in the 1930s.

Treat this list with caution. Cross-referencing with other sources would indicate that it could take many months for the List to be updated after a unit was formed/ disbanded or Establishment varied.

It is indeed out of date compared to the list on my OTC album of the same year.

There is at one OTC not mentioned in any other source so it is still useful

Lt Col Alan Roderick Haig Brown (1877-1918) author of “The OTC in the Great War” 1915, which lists all the OTC at the time.

I recently came across this Hansard entry which dates the closure of 4 Junior Division OTCs in 1934-5:

'Instructions have been issued for the following contingents to be disbanded:—Bradford Grammar School, Northampton School, Reigate Grammar School, and Rydal School. These contingents are being disbanded because they have not, over a period of years, sufficiently fulfilled the purpose for which contingents are designed, that is, to supply officers for the Territorial Army and Supplementary Reserve in peace, and to build up a reserve of potential officers for use in emergency. They are being replaced.'

The 'new' Junior Division OTCs included:

- Christ College Brecon
- Llandovery College.
- Rutlish School
