1. Kitchen table/Garden shed : Usually quite rough with obvious tool marks etc. 2. Factory/Workshop : A more 'professional' appearance , made by someone with metal working experience. 3. Jeweller/Artisan : Normally well made/well finished and quite often numerous "identical" items. I'll pick up a 'modified' badge if it is cheap , more to show what was being done to badges . What I don't like is modern dealers selling obviously 'modified' badges and them pretending they are "rare" or previously unseen 'variations'. I also like finding badges with manufacturing "errors" , wrong design number/spelling mistakes (madal ?) etc. I don't feel a need to justify buying them , I just enjoy finding them ! .

This OWS 1915 badge just sold on eBay , I haven't seen one with the pale blue enamel before.
Any suggestions/opinions ? .

Today's find, sadly no badge, but I am always pleased to find paperwork for my collection. The certificate was presumably printed before March 1915 and has a facsimile of Lord Kitchener's signature.
The 1939 register shows that William A Watkins was still working hard in the Second World War in a tyre factory and doing part time A.R.P. work. Last edited by High Wood; 05-02-23 at 04:10 PM. Reason: Adding information |

Another nice find Simon, probably as rare as the badge if not more so.
All the best, Simon. |

The interesting point is that to produce this badge the lettering would be raised in the die so it is NOT the standard badge as this has incuse lettering which is serifed and this is plain. It would be nice to know what the reverse was like and what the maker's mark was. I'm going to postulate that this is an early variant with the blue outer following on from the 1914 Admiralty pattern. That or it is another way to indicate seniority/ greater skills within the factory/ production line. |

Oh dear....mustn't post late at night...
Of course, there is the white/ blue 1915 badge so this is just another colour choice. Looks like opaque turquoise but still a nice variant. I think that there was/ is a long forgotten code to these badges whether they be plated, enamel filled in incuse lettering or use different colours. Shame we can't ask the old fellers... |
