I can honestly say that from memory I don't think I've seen a similar 'frock' being worn by the senior ranks of the Northumberland's. It would be nice to know if other regiments followed the Devons dress code distinctions between senior and junior ranks or are they a 'one off'
We need some more pictures of soldiers in IPF around that time. I believe it was quite common to make such a distinction, but it seems to have been relatively unregulated, with different regiments establishing their own arrangement. This is not surprising really, as around the same period there was a plethora of different pocket and 'facing' arrangements for officers undress frocks too.

It is notable also that the configuration of the SNCOs knot is similar to that elongated form used on the officers' IPF.

Clearly Annual Inspections were cursory, non-existent, casual or indulgent.

During the time I served WITH not IN the RAF, the AI was a rigorous examination, with minor functionaries swarming over the RAF station before the Great Man arrived.

These days, standardisation is the Grail, in the olden days, individualism was given its head.

This is what made units the families they were, not clones ........... I know which I prefer!

RWF in India were comparatively low-key regarding the tarting-up of scarlet frocks.

I do not know what they are like now (as 1 Royal Welsh), but I always found them to be an ultra conservative regiment. For example they never embraced (or even countenanced) the regimental pullover idea (unlike the RRW) and were the last regiment to abandon the universal grenade collar badge and that was only because of amalgamation.

Found a photo of some 1st Bn, NF senior ranks in India pre-WWI and they do indeed wear a superior pattern frock, with continuous piping down the front and around the skirt, but their knot is the as that for the OR's

Great photo Graham. It's interesting too that the bandsman has a 6-button frock, I have seen that several times before, which makes me wonder if they had a special type.

I think the bandsman has five good conduct badges:

2 or 3 years [depending on date]
5
12
18
23 [21 minimum under the rules]

and counting!

It's also interesting that the Colour Sergeant at top right has gold lace around his collar, matching the RQMS and Sgt Maj, but the other two Colour Sergeants do not. Also, the man second from left appears to be missing white piping around the base of his collar.
