Hi Rob

All the battalions were numbered 1-12, but this was scrapped in October 1914. Anson was indeed number 8. I have seen a Collingwood title with the number 4 mounted above, but have no idea whether this is simply because they didn't have a badge. I may be correct in saying that the RMLI were three or four of the twelve, and would be very interested if anyone has the numbering specifics?

I believe without doubt that your theory is sound. It would be good to see some pics though.

Cheers, Neil

Neil,

1 Drake ( I have these together ,with backplate & have read that it was worn as a cap badge ,from pics !)
2 Benbow (some records show Benbow as 3,including Douglas Jerrold's history) ??
3 Hawke ( some records show Hawke as 2,including Douglas Jerrold's history, but have seen photos of 3 over HAWKE worn as a cap badge, plus an old gent/contact ,who's father was in it, has the title & no.3 from his WW1 items !! )
4 Collingwood
5 Nelson
6 Howe
7 Hood
8 Anson
9-12 RMLI (but never adopted or used)

RND titles & Cap badges is a confused area of study ,with many changes & combinations, etc ,in short spaces of time. Bit by bit,I am working on it though
Origionally numbers were worn above plain R.N.D. title (poss. with coloured company strips behind)prior to 'named' types issue(about mid-way during 1915/Gallipoli fighting period)
Cheers !
Steve

Steve

Fantastic stuff, thanks! I just sent Rob a PM on this, and this adds further ammo to the "number" theory, which appears to now be "fact".

RMLI were 9-12, but what do you mean when you say "never adopted or used"? Do you mean they just wore the RMLI badge and titles, but without numbered titles?

Seems the sealed pattern card copy I have is genuine. There were some doubts about this in the past.

Cheers, Neil

Neil,
I have never had any doubts about the card, all looked correct there, including the style with no 'full stops' is correct for that later time (Sept. 1916, I recall)!
The RMLI never used any numbers above their titles.
Cheers !
Steve
