Yes, very, very common. There were thousands of them made. The Met. SC continued to wear them in chrome with lugs as a cap badge well into the 1960's.

I believe that there were different colours to the crown to denote the different ranks etc i.e.
Sergeant's Cap Badge - King's Crown (Yellow Enamel)
Red enamel U/K
