Thank you for sharing it's excellent to see.
I've just come down to Dunkeld for a rainy long weekend and I was surprised to see that one of my old maps shows a Scottish Horse museum on the town's high street. It may not exist anymore and even if it did it wouldn't be open so late in the year, but if the rain lets up I'm going to try and find it. Was your uncle in the 1st Brigade that left England in 1915? Was he from Perthshire? Mark |

Hi, thanks for the reply. My cousin, who has my great uncles service stuff, actually lives in Norway, she visited the Scottish Horse museum in Dunkeld and found reference to him. James Duncan came from Brechin, Angus and served in the 1/1 Scottish Horse before contracting malaria in 1917/18 he was evacuated to Malta as unfit so was transferred to the RAMC and remained in Malta until 1919. He kept a journal of his time detailing places, people and battles. He did leave the UK in 1915. 3 other brothers served, 2 killed. My grandad and another brother both went to Perth to join the Royal Scots - don’t know why they did not join the Black Watch. Both served with the 12th Btl, then my grandfather served with the brigade MGC. The youngest brother served with the Fife & Forfar Btl of the Black Watch.
I’ve attached a page from his journal with names and addresses. Spent many hours searching for his mates! Bryan |

I have a few photos of the Scottish Horse at Spilsby, Lincolnshire, WWI.
I've found some but thought I had more. If I have then I've misfiled them, I'll continue the search. |

That would be great. I’ve attached another. It says it was taken near Skegness. I suspect it is actually Gibraltar Point nature reserves - a place I know well and was there only last week.

Here is James’s three brothers. The two on the left were both killed on the Western Front. Charles was killed in the same engagement that Reynolds won his VC. My grandfather is on the right. I have his Royal Scots cap badge but swapped his TOS with MGC badge when I was a kid - still cannot belief it! Photo of Malta hospital football team in kit.

Here is my pride and joy! My grandfather gave this to me when I was 7 - it has been in 100’s of school displays and been the envy of my friends both old and young. I did have more stuff but I’ve given and swapped nearly all away, you just can’t dwell on the stupidity of youth.

Hi Leigh, no unit markings! Very disappointing. I looked at German Helmet sites many years ago and it seems most helmets had unit markings.
Added a couple of poor photos. Maker marks, size and the owners name in pencil! |
