Just in case anyone is interested...
This cap-badge is also around in all silver - images attached. Slider looks gold, I know, but this is just an effect of the lighting; the badge is entirely silver. Prob a manufacturer's error, but I thgt there might be some interest. Cheers |

Inns of Court Regt is as rare as rocking horse shit. Only one I know is in the book and even then I had to use an image supplied by the owner. Regards Chris |

Quite a bit. I've only ever handled a blank slider version by Marples and Beasley. Gus-gemma says 300 GBP which means I will have to trade for one if I ever aquire an example. Regards Chris |

Good evening.
Again, this is not my field of expertise, but I did have reason to be trawling back through Mr Bosley's Postal Auction Catalogues back to their first Postal Auction in July 1995. I therefore took the opportunity to try and expand upon the research of our previous Member's notes (above) concerning the offering of previous examples of anodised aluminium West Yorkshire Regiment cap badges. I noted the following, with the hammer prices, and the cost including buyer's premium and VAT given in brackets: 1) 25 January 2006. Lot 62. £605 (£711.66) Ex. Hugh King Collection. 2) 26 April 2006. Lot 132. £330 (£388.18). 3) 30 January 2008. Lot 47. £440 (£517.57). 4) 30 April 2008. Lot 61. £385 (£452.88). 5) 22 July 2009. Lot 453. £140 (£164.68). I do not suggest this list is comprehensive, or that similar examples have not been offered by other Auctioneers. However, all examples appear to be by H W Timings, with slider fittings. So, to answer the question, are they rare? No. Unusual yes, but not rare. Are they worth £300. Probably not, judging by the last example. You pays you money and takes your pick. I could, without any trouble, list a dozen or more examples of hallmarked badges which are recorded, but so far have yet to appear at Auction. Or, hallmarked badges of which I have only seen a single example in nearly thirty years of collecting hallmarked badges. Enjoy. S.T. Last edited by Silver Tourist; 20-05-13 at 09:32 PM. Excellent analysis, ST - thank you.
It just goes to prove that a badge is only ever worth what someone will pay for it. Cheers, Andy C

Anodised aluminium cap badge: The West Yorkshire Rgt.
Good evening.
I am pleased the analysis proved of interest. And, how refreshing to receive a proper note of thanks. It is indeed the case that any item is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it at the moment of sale. There are few items which are so rare that they will not appear again, one day. Assembling a collection is often the product of a lifetime of patience, interlaced with rare flurries of new acquisitions. And, as many of the established collectors will probably confirm, the key is to specialise and then to publish. The late Norman Litchfield, David Linaker, and Walter Lambert being prime examples. It is a shame more collectors do not publish the results of their many years of study. It is notable that of all our County Infantry Regiments only one or two have a comprehensive publication of their badges covering the period from the late 17th. C until the end of the Regiment's existence. That is probably because it really does take a lifetime to acquire, research and publish the necessary record. Some members of this Forum have followed that course: Mr Seaman, Mr Marsh and Mr McWilliam being examples. There are several others. New colllectors would be well advised to take every opportunity to benefit from the expertise of such collectors before settling upon their own area of interest. Only by focusing does one avoid the very dangerous temptation to buy apparently unusual items for premium prices. After over forty years of collecting I have learnt that the rule relating to buses frequently applies to badges: one waits for ages, then three arrive together. The magpie approach to collecting is fantastically attractive and one is tempted from time to time. However, it usually requires deep pockets and can lead to the sort of disparity of pricing so clearly evident in the above case. Enjoy. S.T. |
