8th Battalion Leeds Rifles PWO West Yorkshire Regiment
I recently bought a number of badges as I was after a white metal 7th/8th PWO Yorkshires badge.
With it came this 8th Bn one which as soon as I saw the void under the crown was dubious about. The back with its distinctive slider shape and yeellow metal suggests that it is an early 1970's "Morrison" cap badge. They are not being made with the sliders any more - but different blackened lugged 8th fakes are on ebay in abundance which appear to be from the same die. I enclose a photo of what I believe to be a genuine one for comparison. I also show an ebay offer which has the same void and missing '.' at the end of the 'P.W.O' Last edited by Alan O; 20-01-20 at 07:02 PM. |

Interesting I have an 8th bn with the void under the crown, it also has strengthening tabs both sides of laurel to the crown.
I've always assumed it to be OK! Alan states the void is not a good sign. Will post an image later. Regards Tony.

Check out the P.W.O. as if it is missing the last fullstop then the die is a faker's. Alan |

The sldier looks much better than mine which is a fake. If the die is original (chances are higher than most as it an early restrike) then you may have a pre 1916 badge. However as the dies has so clearly been used to fake badges then it's a tough one to authenticate.

Well nice to see a happy outcome.
I think it is another example of where a genuine die was used to make restrikes so unless there has been so many made that the reverse die has worn out, or the incorrect metals or voiding has been used, then the fixings and finish are the only way of spotting the very first restrikes. Saying that if I did see any with lugs rather than the notched slider and if the reinforcing bar was not there then I would be very wary. |
